this gracious home was built in 1891 by john russell, a scottish furniture maker turned architect/builder of waterworks and water-systems, including those in tacoma, who came to south bend by way of chicago. he built this lovely home, in part, as a 25th wedding anniversary gift to his wife annie. annie russell (storms) on the balcony of her towering home and (inset) in a portrait. back then the house was known as ‘orchard house’ and sometimes the ‘castle’ on alta-vista hill’, and now, the russell house bed and breakfast with all the charm of the time and a little more........
